COURSE OVERVIEW
The OCR Cambridge Advanced National in Applied Science is a Level 3 qualification designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental scientific principles across biology, chemistry, and physics. It emphasises the development of practical skills through activities such as researching, planning, and conducting laboratory investigations. This qualification prepares students for progression to undergraduate study by equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
The course covers core topics in biology, chemistry, and physics, and places a strong emphasis on developing practical skills through laboratory investigations. Students will engage in researching, planning, and performing various experiments, thereby gaining valuable experience in scientific methodologies.
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at 9-4, including grade 4 in English Language, double 4 in Science and 4 in Mathematics.
The OCR Advanced National in Applied Science opens doors to higher education, including degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, and health sciences, as well as applied fields like forensic science and biomedical science. It also supports progression to apprenticeships in roles such as laboratory technician or healthcare associate, and entry-level employment in industries like pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and quality control. Additionally, students can pursue vocational qualifications, such as HNCs for further skill development.
Assessment is divided between externally assessed units and non-exam assessment (NEA) units. The externally assessed units test students’ knowledge and understanding through written examinations, while the NEA units focus on practical skills and are evaluated based on assignments and laboratory work.
