COURSE OVERVIEW
The OCR Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Media is a vocational qualification aimed at learners aged 16 and over who are interested in exploring the world of media and creative industries. It provides a hands-on, practical approach to learning, making it ideal for students who prefer coursework and project-based assessment over traditional exams.
This diploma is equivalent to three GCSEs and is completed over one academic year. It’;s designed to give learners a solid foundation in media production, covering areas such as video and audio editing, graphic design, and multimedia content creation. Students engage in a variety of units that develop both technical skills and theoretical understanding of the media landscape, including how media products are planned, produced, and evaluated.

You need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and Maths.
Students who complete the OCR Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Media have several progression routes available to them, depending on their interests and aspirations.
Most commonly, learners move on to Level 3 qualifications in media or related fields. These might include the OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Media, the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology, or BTEC Level 3 courses in Creative Media Production. These programmes offer a deeper dive into media theory and production, building on the practical skills and knowledge gained at Level 2.
Students on the OCR Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Media are assessed entirely through internally assessed coursework, which is then externally moderated by OCR. This means there are no written exams—assessment is based on practical and written assignments completed throughout the course.
Each unit within the qualification has a set of learning outcomes and assessment criteria. Students demonstrate their understanding and skills by producing a portfolio of evidence for each unit. This evidence can include:
Practical media products (e.g. short films, audio recordings, graphic designs)
Written reports or evaluations explaining their planning, production process, and reflections
Presentations or pitches for media ideas
Witness statements or observations from teachers confirming skills demonstrated during practical tasks
