Haywards Heath College sports stars shine
Haywards Heath College has been celebrating the achievements of the academy teams throughout the season.
The college’s annual sports awards evening, which took place on Tuesday 13 May in the college’s Hub theatre, was hosted by guest speaker Alexia Walker, former England women’s cricketer and current Sussex Women’s head coach.
Basketball, rugby, netball, futsal, and both men’s and women’s football teams attended the event alongside their coaches and teachers.
Throughout the evening, a range of awards were presented across different sports, including Coach’s and Player’s Player of the Season.
Awards were also given out for ‘Academic Athlete’, recognising two students who excelled in both their studies and their sports.
One of the many success stories on the night was Leo Massarella, who received the men’s futsal awards for coach’s and player’s player of the season, as well as the A-level academic athlete award. He said:
“I’m really surprised, to be honest. I was thinking I may win one, but I didn’t think I would get three – I’m quite surprised and very happy, of course.
“One highlight for me this season was when we played a team who were unbeaten all season, one of the best teams we played, and I managed to score a hat-trick and we beat them 4-2, it was one of my best games and a great achievement.”
Vice Principal of Haywards Heath College, Ben Frier, was also in attendance. He added:
“It was fantastic to see all our sports academy teams come together to celebrate their achievements over the past academic year. The dedication and talent on display have truly made this year special.
“A huge congratulations to all the students who received awards. You are the heart of our sports academy, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything you’ve accomplished.”
