Dr Mike Price – Teacher of Science

I can’t express how excited I am to be one of the inaugural A-level Science teachers of Haywards Heath College. Moving from the oldest to the youngest shiny brand new college, what a treat!

As a Collyers subject leader, I founded the Marine Biology sub-aqua club. Biology students who were interested, were invited to do their A level coursework on sunken battleships or even coral reefs!

As part of this, hundreds of students gained diving qualifications, even up to instructor grade. These qualifications and practical experiences helped them in their post college applications.

Academically I gained first class honours in my Bachelor’s degree, and as a part of Academic Therapeutics, at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, I helped look into novel pharmaceutical intervention for heart disease. For this work, in academic medicine, I was awarded a prestigious Welcome Prize. I used part of the prize money to fund a doctorate in my passion at the time, Cell and Molecular Immunology.

Aside from my wife and two young children (Lily and Clara), education (which I first read at the University of Cambridge) is now my main passion. SCUBA Diving is my main hobby, but from memory, beating Ben Frier at Badminton is a lot of fun too, even though he was, and most probably still is, a lot fitter than me.

I’m hoping I can get my Marine Biology dive club up and running for interested Science students at Haywards Heath College. But most of all I’m looking forward to getting back into the lab to teach some science to ambitious hungry young minds!
