COURSE OVERVIEW
By studying the Level 2 Sport students develop a range of skills and techniques that are essential for successful progression into the sports industry or to sports related further education courses. Level 2 Sport students complete units in practical sport as well as coaching while all units are underpinned by theoretical studies. Students are encouraged to study this course alongside other areas of Academy of Sport provision.
This course is made up of Two Core Units:
Unit 1 Fitness for Sport and Exercise: (Externally assessed unit) This unit looks at components of fitness, exploring training methods and investigation of fitness testing to gain understanding of fitness levels. Its assessed with a 1 hour online exam with a mixture of multiple choice, drop down and short/medium answer questions.
Unit 2 Practical Sports Performance: This unit looks at the rules, regulations and scoring systems of different sports, practically demonstrate skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports and reviewing of sports performance.
One Mandatory Unit:
Unit 7 Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance: (Externally assessed unit) This unit will look at the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and the structure and function of the cardiorespiratory system. It is assessed with a 1 hour online exam with a mixture of multiple choice, drop down and short/medium answer questions.
Five Optional Specialist Units:
Unit 3 The Mind and Sports Performance: This unit will look at one of the most interesting subjects in the field of sport; sports psychology. You will learn how the mind is used explain how performance can be both positive and negative. This unit will involve elements of practical examples as well as class-based work.
Unit 5 Training for Personal Fitness: This until will look at designing a personal fitness programme, exercise adherence factors and strategies, implementation of a training programme and reviewing a personal training programme.
Unit 6 Leading Sports Activities: This unit will look at the attributes associated with successful sports leadership, planning and leading sports activities and reviewing personal planning and leading of sports activities.
Unit 9 Lifestyle and Well-being: This unit will look at recommended guidelines for physical activity, what makes a healthy diet, diet planning, health risks associated with smoking and excessive alcohol consumption and the impact of drugs on health and sports performance.
Unit 11 Running a Sports Event: This unit will look at planning, organising and running a sports event and reviewing personal contribution to running a sport event. Students on this course also participate in work experience, which will involve enhancing the local community in terms of delivery of PE & Sport to young children.
FURTHER INFORMATION
You need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above and a passion for sport!

If you achieve a Merit or above and meet attendance and behaviour criteria you can progress to Level 3 courses at the College such as the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport.
The course will be assessed both internally and externally by controlled assessment set by the exam board. Units 1 and 7 will be assessed via an on screen computer exam or written paper. The rest of the course will be assessed using a variety of methods including written work, presentations and practical assessments.
TBC
This is a full-time course although you must take GCSE in Maths and/ or English alongside if you have not yet achieved an 9 – 4 grade in either of these subjects. Alternatively, you will take a Functional Skills course in English and/or Mathematics. A GCSE Science (minimum entry requirement of a grade 3) may also be available depending on your need to study English and/or Maths courses as set out above.
