Level 3

Physics A-level

COURSE OVERVIEW

From the origins of the universe to the fundamental particles from which we are made, studying Physics develops our curiosity and challenges us to think critically about our natural world. Whether it is energy production, engineering, space science, nuclear physics or the development of therapeutic and diagnostic medical equipment, there is an area of physics to inspire you.
Through demonstrations, practical experiments and discussions you will cultivate skills in analysis, evaluation, problem solving, teamwork and IT. There is an emphasis on practical skills alongside theoretical work, and the Practical Endorsement provides evidence of your successful development of your experimental and data handling skills.

The AQA A level Physics specification is as follows:

Year 1
• Measurements and their errors
• Particles and radiation
• Waves
• Mechanics and materials
• Electricity
Year 2
• Further mechanics and thermal physics
• Fields and their consequences
• Nuclear physics
• Option module (usually Turning Points in Physics)

Studying with us provides enrichment opportunities which include participation in British Physics Olympiad competitions, CREST awards, peer mentoring, lectures from universities and the Institute of Physics, and in-depth topic reviews.

With the pace of scientific discovery and development ever increasing, the range of career opportunities for people with scientific skills are unimaginably diverse. Physics is considered to be one of the most highly regarded A level subjects by employers and university level course providers.

A Level Physics builds on the work done in GCSE Science and Mathematics, so you’;ll need good GCSE results from both. Written communication is also important, so you’;ll need to be a strong writer.. Due to the very mathematical nature of the course, it is strongly recommended that you also study Maths A-level.
