COURSE OVERVIEW
The course aims to develop your understanding of the language and culture of France and other French speaking countries. Topics studied include: 1. Social issues and trends: • The changing nature of family: family & relationships • The ‘cyber-society’;: Internet, social medial, technology • The place of voluntary work • Positive features of a diverse • society • Life for the marginalized • How criminals are treated • Positive aspects of diversity • Life of marginalised people • Crime and prevention 2. Artistic and political culture: • A culture proud of its heritage • Contemporary francophone music • Cinema: the 7th art form • Teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment • Demonstrations, strikes -; who holds the power? • Politics and immigration 3. Literary text: Un Secret by Grimbert / film: La Haine by Kassovitz The lessons include: • A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course and the lessons are very varied. • In order to practise the five language skills you will work individually, in pairs and in groups at different times. • You will spend about half your lesson time in the language laboratory, completing listening exercises, speaking tasks, working on-line and word-processing written work. • 1:1 support is available to all students.

“You need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4, including grade 6 in French and grade 4 in English Language and Maths. An interest in France and French speaking countries culture and society is very important. A willingness to express yourself orally is essential. “
French is a recognised academic subject and therefore is an excellent preparation for higher education in languages as well as a number of other areas such as Business, Law, and European Studies. Past students can be also be found in media, journalism and tourism. It is the necessary background for careers in teaching French at both primary and secondary levels. Students with language qualifications are really sought after by employers and this is reflected in enhanced salaries.
